Prof. Dr. Ihab Hassan

Sommersemester 2001

Between the Eagle and the Sun: Traces of Japan [1996]). Hassan ist Vilas Research Professor of English and Comparative Literature an der University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.

Seminar: Intercultural Perspectives - The Australian Example

The course focuses on one continent and one history, Australia, to develop literary, philosophical, historical, and social perspectives on the question of interculturalism. In the case of Australia, Western and non-Western societies collided with a "fatal impact." Moreover, within the West itself, English, Irish, and other European and non-European cultures collided, as did various classes within the colonial and penal context. Thus, though the focus of the course is on Australian literature, the relations of Europeans and Aborigines, Aborigines and later Australians, Australians and still newer immigrants (like Arabs), reveal the intercultural complexities of our world. The emphasis of the course is on experienced, not just theoretical or ideological, knowledge; it favours intellectual tact and literary nuance. - David Malouf will also make a guest appearance in the seminar and read from his works.
